An interesting article appeared on my feed that discussed the idea of post divorce financial discussions with your ex spouse.
Often during a divorce the major financial discussions and decisions are made such as appropriate child support and appropriate spousal support. But what happens after the divorce is complete and the things that aren’t covered in the divorce rise up?
Per the article, child support doesn’t always account for things like college, camps, or technological expenses or helping kids pay for cars. Those are discussions that should be had.
The discussions might revolve around a 50/50 split of the expenses or they could involve proportional contribution per each parents earning ability.
Another pointer that the article mentions is to make priorities for things that are important to you and act accordingly. The article mentions that if one parent with primary custody is very invested in an activity for the child, but your ex doesn’t agree, then that parent will need to be prepared to make the major financial expense.
